Elon Musk in front of the White House

Donald Trump has claimed Time's Person of the Year title yet again, but Elon Musk’s 2024 was arguably just as transformative—if not more so. As America braces for his deeper political involvement and whispers grow about his role in the future Trump administration, we are taking a closer look at Musk’s meteoric rise in politics, his business ventures, and the eccentric personal lifestyle that continues to grab headlines.

The Political Maverick

In 2024, the world's richest billionaire dove headfirst into American politics. His $259 million dollar bet on Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign became a lightning rod for debate, sparking fierce criticism and excitement on opposite sides. Musk’s involvement in Trump’s campaign signalled his desire to align the political landscape with his vision of deregulation and unfettered innovation.

His contributions were channeled through pro-Trump groups like America PAC and RBG PAC. In return, Musk found himself embedded in Trump’s political machine, with an invitation to co-lead the proposed Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. A nod to Musk’s meme-based crypto coin, DOGE’s mission is to streamline federal bureaucracy—an effort Musk has long championed as essential to progress. While his detractors raised alarms about conflicts of interest, Musk dismissed these concerns, doubling down on his belief that bureaucratic red tape stifles innovation.

Musk’s political involvement extends well beyond boardrooms and PAC donations, with his platform X (formerly Twitter) becoming a central weapon in his campaign arsenal. As the platform’s owner and its most prolific user, Musk leverages X to dominate online discourse, wielding its unmatched engagement metrics to amplify his ideas and target opponents. His use of AI-generated memes to mock Vice President Kamala Harris and his flirtation with the "Dark MAGA" movement have raised eyebrows and sparked heated debates.

Dark MAGA, a meme-heavy faction of the alt-right, thrives on revenge-driven imagery and apocalyptic depictions of Trump’s return to power. Musk’s reposts of such content, combined with his conspiratorial musings and targeted attacks, have made X a hotbed of political controversy. Critics argue that Musk’s posts, often cryptic and provocative, blur the line between internet trolling and calculated political strategy. His unfiltered rants and apparent delight in stirring the pot have led to widespread speculation about his true ideological leanings.

The X Empire

While Musk’s political stunts grabbed headlines, his financial ascent was just as mind-boggling. The year 2024 saw Elon Musk, already the richest man in the world, increase his net worth to $454 billion, bolstered by the remarkable performances of his various business ventures.

Tesla, long the poster child for the electric vehicle (EV) revolution, enjoyed a banner year. A 70% surge in stock value silenced critics who had questioned the company’s leadership amidst growing competition. Tesla’s success was fueled by record-breaking EV production, advancements in battery technology, and aggressive market expansions in Europe and China. Musk’s vision for sustainable energy, coupled with Tesla’s ability to scale rapidly, reinforced its position as the dominant player in the EV market. Tesla’s energy division also made significant strides in battery storage technology, unveiling innovations that could revolutionize renewable energy adoption. Musk’s “master plan” for a fully sustainable future seemed more attainable than ever, even as skeptics continued to question Tesla’s lofty valuations.

SpaceX, Musk’s private aerospace company, also had a stellar year. Its valuation soared to $350 billion, cementing its status as the world’s most valuable private aerospace firm. SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service expanded its global footprint, adding millions of subscribers and laying the foundation for Musk’s ultimate ambition: funding the colonization of Mars. The company’s achievements weren’t limited to commercial successes. SpaceX’s advancements in reusable rocket technology continued to push the boundaries of space exploration. The successful launch of its Starship prototype marked a pivotal step toward Musk’s dream of interplanetary travel, further solidifying his reputation as a visionary leader.

Musk’s newest project, xAI, entered the competitive artificial intelligence arena with a bold mission: to promote transparency and align AI development with human values. Musk has been a vocal critic of companies like OpenAI, accusing them of prioritizing profit over responsibility. With xAI, he aims to chart a different course, and its chatbot Grok—integrated into X—has already made waves for its irreverent yet practical approach. In a crowded field, xAI’s unique positioning and Musk’s track record make it a contender to watch.

Personal Life Unplugged

Elon Musk’s private life is as chaotic and controversial as his public one, with the lines between the two often blurring entirely. His openness about personal matters—whether through social media or public appearances—paired with a constant stream of scandals, places Musk at the center of attention not just as a tech innovator but also as a polarizing cultural figure.

Keyboard Warrior

Musk’s use of X remains a defining aspect of his public life. The platform has become both a megaphone for his ideas and a battleground for his critics. From sharing controversial takes and cryptic memes to launching combative responses against rivals, Musk uses X to broadcast his thoughts with little filter. While his posts often spark heated debates and backlash, they highlight his unapologetically direct approach to communication—for better or worse.

But Musk’s keyboard crusading isn’t limited to warring with critics. Musk is also notorious for his intense passion for video games. In 2024, he achieved a top 20 ranking in Diablo IV, a testament to his skill and competitiveness. However, his exploits in Path of Exile 2 veered into comedy when the game’s anti-cheat system flagged him for "excessive actions per minute." Rather than deflect, Musk embraced the incident, turning it into a viral moment by joking about his "futuristic reflexes" and praising the game developers. Musk has also publicly praised Elden Ring for its unique game design and immersive world. However, his unconventional in-game build—widely criticized as ineffective—became a running joke among gamers online.

Family Life

Musk’s personal life frequently intertwines with his public persona. Appearances with his young son, X Æ A-12 (endearingly referred to as "X"), have become a hallmark of his recent public engagements. Whether at high-profile events or through candid moments shared on X (the platform), these glimpses into Musk’s fatherhood offer a softer, more personal dimension to his otherwise intense public image.

Yet, Musk’s family dynamics are anything but conventional. His separation from long-time partner Grimes and their unique approach to co-parenting have attracted significant media attention. The couple’s public statements reveal a co-parenting arrangement that often appears as unconventional as Musk’s entrepreneurial ventures. Reports of Grimes referring to their parenting style as “fluid” and the occasional cryptic tweets from both sides only amplify the public's fascination with their relationship.

Musk is also a father to multiple—at least 12— children from previous relationships. His older children remain more private compared to X, but Musk has occasionally mentioned his pride in their accomplishments, such as his eldest son's interest in artificial intelligence. Not all of their relationships are rosy, though. Notably, Musk is estranged from his daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson, who legally changed her name and gender, distancing herself from him. Musk has publicly attributed this rift to ideological differences, drawing further criticism.

Minimalism

Adding to the intrigue of Musk’s lifestyle is his recent decision to move in a $50,000 prefab home near SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas. The compact dwelling, reportedly a 375-square-foot unit from Boxabl's Casita model, reflects Musk's minimalist lifestyle and focus on his ventures.

Musk's choice to inhabit such a home aligns with his statements about preferring simplicity and reducing personal consumption. However, some observers speculate that this move also serves to spotlight Boxabl's innovative housing solutions, potentially testing the waters for Musk to expand into smart housing.

A Year of Reinvention

In a single year, Elon Musk has reshaped both his public image and the industries he touches. His foray into politics—from funding Trump’s campaign to co-leading DOGE—signals a deeper engagement with American governance, while Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI continue to dominate and disrupt their fields. Musk’s quirks and contradictions defy easy categorization. For better or worse, Musk’s influence continues to shape our lives and the world we inhabit.
