Bringing in a rising English talent on lower wages would tick two Maresca boxes: fresh legs for the front line and long-term resale potential under the club’s amortisation model.

What it means for Chelsea’s wide-player pecking order

If Bynoe-Gittens arrives and Sancho stays, Maresca would have an embarrassment of riches out wide: Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk, Raheem Sterling, Sancho and Bynoe-Gittens fighting for two places. Something has to give, and the simplest way to square the circle is to pull the Sancho rip-cord, eat the penalty and remove one high earner from the wage bill—much as the club did with Romelu Lukaku last summer.
